Troustrie House B&B, situated in the stunning ‘Kingdom of Fife’ peninsula and close to St. Andrews, is a Georgian farmhouse, full of charm and character, providing elegant, comfortable accommodation for an outstanding stay…not to mention of course delicious home-cooked breakfasts using local, organic and free-range products where possible!

More than a B&B though, Troustrie House is on a mission to champion the natural environment and their re-wilding initiative is one to be commended! B&B host, Lesley MacGregor moved to Troustrie in 2003 – a huge attraction being that the property included six acres of grassland and a derelict steading, so the scene was set to start managing the land in a low impact way with the aim of creating a wildlife friendly habitat.

The project has progressed over the years – 2007 saw the planting of 350 broad leaf trees and a mixed hedge boundary and then in 2014, a further 120 trees were added including hawthorn, willow, oak, alder, elder, rowan ash, gean cherry, apple, field maple, hazel and beech.

Fast-forwarding to the present day, the trees are all maturing and the boundary hedge stands 7 feet tall! A safe haven for wildlife, visitors include fallow deer, brown hare and badgers. For ‘twitchers’ there’s plenty to see including sky larks, reed buntings, yellow hammers, tree sparrows, yellow wagtails, house martins and tawny and barn owls.

Not resting on their laurels though, there are more plans afoot to increase the site’s biodiversity and a pond should feature in the not too distant future.

So, as the days ahead look brighter and restrictions are set to lift, give some thought to a stay at this great B&B.
